Ahmedabad: As Boris Johnson landed here on Thursday for a two-day visit to India, the question on everyone’s minds was what British Prime Minister will have to say on India’s role in the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.
While the UK has been one of the most vocal nations to oppose Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to launch a military operation against Ukraine, India have condemned the killings and violence but treaded a more cautious path, abstaining from UN’s vote to oust Russia from UNHRC.
“As I think everybody understands, India and Russia have historically had a very different relationship perhaps than Russia and the UK have had over the last couple of decades. We have to reflect that reality, but clearly I’ll be talking about it to Narendra Modi,” Johnson was quoted as saying by ANI.
Johnson, who visited Akshardham temple and a JCB facility, made it clear that the UK won’t meddle into India’s affairs.
“India has its own opinions to make and we won’t like someone else meddling into those. We don’t unto others, we don’t expect it from others, too,” said Johnson, the first British PM to visit Gujarat.
He mentioned that India have raised the attacks on Ukraine.
“Well, they’ve already raised Ukraine, as you can imagine with Prime Minister Modi. And actually, if you look at what the Indians have said, they were very strong in their condemnation of the atrocities in Bucha,” Johnson said.
