Mumbai: Spiritual leader Sadhguru has expressed surprise over the casting of Yash as Ravana in ‘Ramayana’, stating he is too ‘handsome’ to play the role of a villain.
“I don’t know how Yash became Ravana. I know him very well,” said the spiritual leader during a candid conversation with filmmaker Namit Malhotra.
The filmmaker explained that Ravana was a ‘very important part’ in the film and they wanted to cast someone powerful for it.
“It’s because we were almost looking at a superstar-level person to come and play that role,” the filmmaker said.
However, Sadhguru seemed unconvinced. “A villain always means he has a blunt nose and a large stature. But Yash is a handsome man.”
Agreeing with Sadhguru, the filmmaker said, “Yes, very handsome and very talented star in the country and incredibly loved. So, the whole idea was, how do we try him?”
But the spiritual leader persisted. “Somehow, have you noticed villains always have a blunt nose, not a sharp nose?”
Namit explained, “That’s a new learning for me, I will look into it. But there had to be a lot of shades of Ravana in terms of why he was who he was. And he was a devout believer of Shiva.”
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, ‘Ramayana’ is a two-part film.
The film features Ranbir Kapoor as Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, along with Ravie Dubey as Lakshman, and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman.
The first part of the film is scheduled to be released during Diwali 2026 and the second part on Diwali 2027.
