Saina Salonika Of Odisha Wins Silver In Western Asia Youth Chess Contest

Bhubaneswar: Odisha-based chess player Saina Salonika won a silver medal in the Western Asia Youth Chess Championship in U-16 girl category at New Delhi.

India topped the medal tally with 15 gold, 14 silver and bronze medals.

Uzbekistan was second with one gold, followed by Bangladesh and Tajikistan with a silver each.

Kazakhstan and Sri Lanka received a bronze each.

This is Saina’s 16th international medal.

In June 2019, Saina got her maiden International Master (IM) norm at the Goa International Grandmasters Chess Tournament.

She won the bronze medal in the U-12 girls’ category of the World Youth Chess Championship held in Greece in 2015.

She also bagged a gold medal in U-14 category of Commonwealth Chess Championship in 2017 and in the U-16 rapid competition at the Asian Youth Chess Championship in Thailand in 2018.
