New York: Celebrated author Salman Rushdie has lost sight in one eye and the use of a hand following a brutal attack two-and-a-half months ago, his agent revealed.
Rushdie was stabbed multiple times in several parts of the body, including neck and torso, at a literary event in New York City on August 12.
Hadi Matar, who was charged with murder and second-degree assault, stabbed the 75-year-old author 12 times as a result of which Rushdie was on ventilator for a few days. The full extent of his injuries, though, was unclear till now.
His literary agent Andrew Wyle told Spanish newspaper El Pais that the Booker Prize winner’s injuries were “profound” and that he has “lost the sight of one eye.”
“He had three serious wounds in his neck,” Wylie was quoted as saying.
“One hand is incapacitated because the nerves in his arm were cut. And he has about 15 more wounds in his chest and torso… It was a brutal attack,” Wylie added, without revealing if Rushdie is still in hospital.
There were death threats, assassination attempts and fatwas issued against the India-born British-American writer after the release of his controversial novel ‘The Satanic Verses’ in 1988.
