Bhubaneswar: A sanitary napkin vending machine was installed in Bhubaneswar-Jagadalpur Hirakhand Express on Tuesday. This is the first train to have such a facility under East Coast Railway.
An initiative of East Coast Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation (ECoRWWO) for promoting and securing women’s well-being and health, the machine was inaugurated by its president Madhulika Singh. The slim and sleek vending machine dispenses the sanitary napkin when Rs 5 coin is dropped into it. It has a capacity of 25 napkins, which are refilled from time to time.
The on-board machine is for the convenience of women passengers travelling in the train, which is hugely popular and considered a lifeline of thousands of passengers in tribal and interior areas of three states – Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
One such machine was earlier installed in Mumbai-New Delhi Rajdhani Express.
The ECoRWWO has also put up such machines at Bhubaneswar, Puri, Sambalpur, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram railway stations.
