Sanitation Workers Protest Brutal Murder Of Their Leader In Bhubaneswar, Demand Death Penalty For Accused

Bhubaneswar: A day after President of BMC Sanitation Employees’ Association president Sahadeb Nayak was hacked to death in Bhubaneswar, a large number of people staged a protest in the city demanding death penalty for the accused persons.

As per sources, many sanitation workers and others staged a demonstration near Sishu Bhawan Chhak in the state capital protesting the gruesome murder of their leader in broad daylight in Rasulgarh area of the city on Wednesday.

While the demonstrators demanded death sentence for those allegedly involved in the murder, wife of the deceased met Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) seeking justice.

Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das said the sanitation workers were forced to it the streets as they are shaken after the murder of their leader. Officials of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and police are holding talks with the protesters in an effort to resolve the issue, she said.

Notably, Sahadeb was hacked to death near Rasulgarh flyover when he was returning on a scooter after dropping his daughter at her school.

Meanwhile, the Commissionerate Police have arrested three prime accused, including a woman, in connection with the murder.

The accused, identified as Laxmidhara Nayak, Rocky Nayak and Lipika Nayak, were apprehended by a special team of the police from Saranakula in Nayagarh district. They are residents of Kedarpalli and nearby areas, sources said.

While police are yet to specify the motive behind the broad daylight murder, official sources said brown sugar peddling could be the reason behind the gruesome crime.

The victim was hacked to death by the three accused for opposing the illegal drug peddling, the sources claimed.
