Sanitation Workers Stage Cease-Work Protest In Bhubaneswar Over Salary Hike

Bhubaneswar: Garbage was found lying unattended in several wards of the Smart City on Monday as sanitations workers of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) resorted to a cease-work protest.

Hundreds of workers gathered under Rajmahal overbridge, demanding increased salary of Rs 15,000 and a stop to the waste segregation work. They accused both the state government and the civic body of ignoring their repeated requests for a salary hike. “We are demanding a monthly salary of Rs 15,000. Besides, the BMC should hire separate workers for waste segregation. The government has increased salary of almost all the departments but has failed to address our concerns,” said a protesting worker.

They also alleged that their basic need for gloves and soap are also not met. “We have been keeping the city but the authorities have failed to empathise with our situation and acknowledge our demands,” said another protester.
