Lahore: Amir Sarfaraz, accused of brutally killing Indian prisoner in Pakistan Sarabjit Singh in 2013, was gunned down by unidentified assailants here on Sunday, reported PTI.
Motorcycle-borne assailants attacked Amir Sarfaraz, alias Tamba, one of Pakistan’s wanted underworld dons, in Lahore’s Islampura area.
Tamba was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, and succumbed to his injuries.
Sarabjit died of cardiac arrest in Lahore’s Jinnah Hospital in the early hours of May 2, 2013, after being comatose for nearly a week following a brutal assault with bricks and iron rods by inmates, including Tamba, inside the Kot Lakhpat jail.
A case was filed against Tamba and others for attacking Sarabjit in prison. Tamba, however, was acquitted by a Pakistan court in 2018 because of “lack of evidence” against him.
Sarabjit was awarded death sentence for spying charges and killing 14 Pakistani citizens in bomb blasts in Pakistan’s Punjab province in 1990. Sarabjit’s family and Indian authorities denied the charges, with his next of kin claiming that he mistakenly crossed the Pakistan border while farming.
Lahore-born Tamba was a close associate of Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed.
