Sarvodaya Leader Sumitra Choudhuri Passes Away At 95

Bhubaneswar: Sarvodaya leader from Odisha Sumitra Chouhuri passed away at her residence at Bakharabad in Cuttack on Sunday. She was 95.

Her last rites will be performed in Cuttack on Monday.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed deep grief at the demise of the veteran leader. He described her as a true Gandhian who had dedicated her entire life to spreading Gandhian values and the uplift of women.

“On her death, Odisha has lost a great woman and dedicated social worker,” he said.

The CM conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Choudhuri was married to Manmohan Choudhuri, the son of veteran freedom fighter Rama Devi and Gopabandhu Choudhuri.

Born on November 15, 1924, she was a noted writer and social worker in Odisha and known for helping the victims of droughts, cyclones and floods.

She was also involved in Bhoodan movement, which was initiated by Acharya Vinoba Bhave.

She had opened two orphanages in the interior parts of Odisha as well as several branches of Kasturaba Gandhi Memorial Trust in the state.

Choudhuri was the chief editor of Sarvodaya magazine till her death.
