Bhubaneswar: A Satellite Brain Bank will soon be set up at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, for conducting research in neurosciences.
According to sources, the department of pathology with laboratory medicine has received funding from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for the bank, which will be a repository for human brain tissues.
A total of Rs 47.7 lakh has been sanctioned for the first year.
The facility will be set up in collaboration with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans), Bengaluru.
“This will be the first of its kind in the eastern region and will boost research in neurosciences,” AIIMS Bhubaneswar director Gitanjali Batmanabane told TOI.
Associate professor Suvendu Purkait, the chief coordinator of the project, said molecular research of the brain helps in identifying the cause of disease and on its basis, “further treatment can be given for future betterment”.
