New Delhi: The Supreme Court, on Monday, issued notices to the Centre and the Delhi government over what it called an “important” Public Interest Litigation (PIL) which sought an alternative protest site instead of Jantar Mantar in the national capital.
Jantar Mantar is no longer a proper protest site, as a lot of inconvenience has been caused to the general public, the plea stated.
The PIL was moved by Satish Chand Kaushik through his counsel Aakarshan Aditya. The bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana also issued notices to the Delhi Police Commissioner and New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), as reported by timesnow.in.
“It has been stated in the plea that Jantar Mantar is not a proper site anymore for such protests due to the ingress-outgress issue. Supply of medical essentials, etc. I think this is important… please take instructions, Mr Solicitor. Issue notice and list this separately,” CJI Kant told Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
The petitioner’s advocate also mentioned that Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP’s) national convener, Arvid Kejriwal, called a townhall and decided to march to the Prime Minister’s residence.
“Another July 20 incident should be avoided,” he stated.
Replying to his submission, the CJI stated: “They know how to handle it. If they cannot, come to us for mishandling. I am sure they will handle it.” The matter was directed to be listed separately.
Jantar Mantar, which is practically in the heart of New Delhi, witnessed a massive protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) recently against the NEET UG 2026 paper leak and other irregularities in the education system.
There was total chaos on July 20 after the protesters took out a march towards Parliament.
