School Dropout From West Bengal Arrested For Practising As Ayurvedic Doctor In Odisha’s Berhampur

Berhampur: Police have arrested a man from West Bengal for allegedly claiming himself to be an Ayurvedic doctor and carrying out treatment without having any medical degree in Berhampur of Odisha’s Ganjam district.

According to police sources, the accused, identified as Utpal Bala of Hoogly in West Bengal, had been running an Ayurvedic clinic in first floor of a building near Gate Bazaar square in the town. He had put up a board outside the clinic mentioning the treatment of piles, sexual health and sexually transmitted diseases.

Jashya Muthamajhi from Kandhamal filed a police complaint against Utpal alleging that the ‘so-called’ doctor had taken Rs 12,000 from him a few months ago for treatment of a disease. When Jashya did not get relief from the disease, he visited the clinic again.

Utpal demanded Rs 12,000 more for further treatment. Suspecting the doctor, Jashya filed the complaint at Berhampur Town police station. After registering a case, the police started investigation.

During the investigation, the police came to know that Utpal neither had BAMS (Ayurvedic) certificate nor any other medical degree. In fact, he had not even passed Class VIII. He had also cheated many poor patients from Ganjam and nearby districts earlier.

On the basis of investigation, the police arrested Utpal and forwarded him to the court on Thursday. They also seized surgery instruments from his possession.
