Balasore: A school student went missing while immersing a Ganesh idol in river Subarnarekha in the district on Sunday.
According to sources, Ganesh puja was celebrated in a private coaching centre at Rajghat under Jaleswar block on Friday. After the rituals were performed on Sunday, three students of Class X, who were also taking coaching at the centre, took the idol for immersion.
While they were immersing the idol at Baruni Ghat of Subarnarekha river, all of them slipped and went inside the river. They could not fight the strong current of the swollen river that carried them deep inside and shouted for help.
The locals dived into the river and rescued two students from the river but could not trace the third student. The untraced student was identified as Guru Prasad Samal of Ramachandrapur village in Jaleswar block.
On being informed, Fire personnel reached the spot and started search operation. But had not found Guru till the report was filed.
