Bhubaneswar: With mercury plummeting to 7-8°C amid a cold wave warning, the Kandhamal administration has revised the school timings.
“All schools will run from 10 am to 4 pm in the district during winter. We have taken these measures for the safety of students since the district is reeling under extreme cold weather in the morning,” collector Ved Bhusan said in an order issued on Wednesday.
He also ordered for setting up of night shelters for the homeless in urban areas, including Phulbani, Baliguda and G.Udayagiri.
Starting this week, the night temperature dropped to 8.4°C in G Udayagiri on November 11, with Daringbadi and Phulbani recording 10°C and 11°C respectively. A day later, Daringbadi recorded the lowest minimum night temperature of 9.5°C, while G Udayagiri and Phulbani were close second and third at 10.5°C and 11°C respectively.
With a cold wave sweeping Odisha, the mercury dropped to 8.5°C and 8.7°C in the hill stations of Daringbadi and G Udayagiri respectively on November 12. Phulbani recorded 10°C.
On November 13, Daringbadi and G Udayagiri recorded the coldest nights of the season at 7.5°C and 7.6°C respectively. The night temperature dropped further to 7°C in G Udayagiri in the last 24 hours. Daringbadi recorded 7.5°C while Phulbani at 8.5°C saw a sharp drop of 5°C in the night-time reading from normal.
