Bhubaneswar: A journalist of an Odia daily was allegedly attacked at Maharaja Cinema hall for opposing a group of Utkal University students who were passing vulgar comments on women.
The victim, identified as Kapilendra Pradhan, sustained multiple injuries. He was admitted to Capital Hospital and discharged after primary treatment. According to sources, the incident took place at Maharaja Picture Palace at around 12.30 pm on Saturday. Pradhan alleged that he was beaten up by 10-12 students of Utkal University inside the movie hall as he was trying to stop the boys from passing vulgar comments on women who were watching a film.
As per the complaint lodged by Pradhan in Saheed Nagar police station, the accused, sitting next to Pradhan started passing comments on some women in the cinema hall. They claimed that they were students of Utkal University and started beating Pradhan. Though there were hundreds of people and the staff of the cinema hall, no one intervened.
As per the complaint, the accused also forcibly took Pradhan’s identity card and gold chain. Pradhan demanded immediate arrest of the accused, as they had also threatened to kill him.
In the written complaint, Pradhan mentioned some names. “Soumya Ranjan, Amiya Patnaik and Chintu, among other accused students of Utkal University attacked me and took my office identity card and gold chain forcibly,” he said.
