Bratislava: A two-week lockdown, including curfew, has been imposed in Slovakia from Thursday amid a record jump in COVID-19 cases, broadcaster TA3 reported, citing Economy Minister Richard Sulik.
Most retail businesses have been closed and residents can only leave their homes to go to work or school and to visit essential shops and services.
On Tuesday, the European Union nation registered more than 10,000 daily caseloads for the first time since the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Hospitalisations too have hit a “critical point”.
“The situation is serious. We got here because the (existing) measures were not observed,” said Prime Minister Eduard Heger.
Notably, neighbouring Austria had imposed a full national lockdown from Monday.
