Sydney: The wounds of a stabbing and shooting spree at a shopping mall on Saturday are still quite raw, yet this major city in east Australia saw another horrific attack on Monday.
This time, the target was Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Sydney’s Wakeley area.
A bishop and several worshippers were injured when a man with a knife attacked them, Reuters reported.
Police arrested a man, who is currently assisting them in the inquiry, a police statement said.
Fortunately, those attacked received non-life threatening injuries and are being treated by paramedics, police officials said.
According to local media, a church leader was delivering a service at the Assyrian church when a man approached the altar, raised his right arm and slashed the preacher with a knife. As panic engulfed the worshippers, the attacker injures some of them while trying to leave the premises.
Videos of the incident soon surfaced on social media showing a man lunging at the preacher and stabbing him.
“A police operation is underway in Wakeley following reports of a stabbing… Officers arrested a male and he is assisting police with inquiries. The injured people suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are being treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics,” New South Wales Police posted on social media following the incident.
AFP quoted ambulance service personnel as saying that four men, aged between 20 and 70, were being treated for injuries, including lacerations.
