Koraput: A girl, who was set on fire by her alleged spurned lover in Semiliguda town, died while undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Monday.
The girl was a student of a private engineering college in Semiliguda area. Sources said she sustained 50 per cent burn injuries after her spurned lover set her ablaze following an argument.
She was rushed to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in Koraput and from there shifted to MKCG Medical and Hospital in Berhampur as her condition deteriorated, before again being shifted to the SCB.
The accused has been identified as Gopinath Khora, a resident of Nandapur in Koraput.
Sources said the girl belongs to Nandapur in Koraput. She was in a relationship with Gopinath, but had fallen out with him recently.
On May 31, Gopinath entered the girl’s house forcefully and poured petrol on her and threatened to set her afire. The girl rushed into a nearby bathroom but Gopinath lit a piece of paper and pushed the bathroom door open and set her on fire.
On being informed, residents rushed to the spot and took the girl to Koraput DHH.
The accused managed to flee from the spot. Latest reports said a special squad had been formed to nab him.
