Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s journey in the field of sports since it became a separate state in 1936 was discussed at a seminar, organised by Odia daily Nirbhaya, at Utkal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCI) conference hall here on Sunday.
Associate editor of Nirbhay Sambit Mohapatra moderated the discussion, which focused on achievements of Odisha’s sportspersons during the past 82 years and also the road ahead.
Noted sportspersons, including former India hockey captain Dillip Tirkey, former cricket international Debasish Mohanty, Olympian Anuradha Biswal, mountaineer Ganesh Jena and chess player Suryanshu Satyapragyan, graced the occasion.
All the dignitaries shared their experiences and thoughts and highlighted the challenges they have faced during their sporting careers.
Editor of Nirbhay Nabin Das welcomed the sports veterans and dwelled upon the advantages and career opportunities in sports.
Former assistant director of Odisha’s sports and youth services department Ashok Mohanty and Odisha Football Association vice-president Bhakta Ballav Das highlighted the successes achieved by players of the state since 1950.
During the seminar, achievements of Odisha’s footballers in Santosh Trophy, cricketers in Ranji Trophy and women athletes were discussed in detail.
Sports journalist Suresh Swain, Sukesh Behera, former footballer Prafulla Mishra, athletics coach Arun Das and hockey coach Kalucharan Choudhury were also present.
