Bhubaneswar: Senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and former Odisha minister Susanta Singh passed away early Monday at the age of 53 following a prolonged illness.
Singh, who had been battling a liver-related ailment, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar after his health deteriorated in recent days.
The senior BJD leader represented Bhatli Assembly constituency in Baragada district for three consecutive terms after winning elections in 2009, 2014, and 2019. He also served as a key cabinet minister holding vital portfolios, including Labour and Employment, Energy, and Rural Development, when the regional party was in power in the state.
Born on March 17, 1973, in Bausenmora, Singh was widely regarded as one of the BJD’s most influential leaders and strategists in western Odisha. His contributions helped strengthen the party’s base in the region over the years. His health reportedly worsened after the 2024 electoral defeat, keeping him largely out of public life in recent months.
Tributes poured in from political leaders across party lines following news of his death. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow, offering prayers to Lord Jagannath for eternal peace for the departed soul and extending condolences to the bereaved family. “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of senior leader and former minister of the Odisha government, Susant Singh. I offer my condolences to the bereaved family members while praying at the feet of Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath for the eternal peace of his departed soul. Om Shanti,” Majhi said in a post on social media.
Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik remembered Singh as a dedicated public servant and skilled organiser whose contributions to strengthening the BJD and serving the people would remain memorable. “His contributions to strengthening the Biju Janata Dal, along with his service to the people, will always remain memorable. While praying for the eternal peace of his departed soul, I also extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family members during this sorrowful time,” he said.
Deputy Chief Ministers K V Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, alongside legislators across political spectrums, also expressed their grief.
Official sources confirmed that his mortal remains will be brought to the Odisha Legislative Assembly premises for leaders and lawmakers to pay their last respects before being transported to his native village for final rites.
