Lucknow: Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kripa Shankar Kannaujiya has been demoted to the rank of constable for an extra-marital affair he had three years ago.
The senior Uttar Pradesh cop was caught in a compromising position with a female constable at a hotel in 2021.
Kanaujia, who was previously Circle Officer (CO) Bighapur in Unnao, has now been assigned to the 26th Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) battalion in Gorakhpur.
It was in July 21 that Kanaujia went ‘missing’.
He had taken leave citing family reasons, but instead of returning home, he checked into a hotel in Kanpur with the female constable.
What raised suspicions was the fact that he switched off his private and official mobile numbers.
The CO’s worried wife contacted SP Unnao to seek help. A surveillance team then discovered that Kanaujia’s mobile network had ceased functioning after he reached the Kanpur hotel.
Unnao Police team rushed to the hotel where they found the CO and the female constable together.
CCTV cameras had captured the duo’s entry to the hotel, providing crucial leads to the investigation.
Police submitted a report to the government, and after detailed review, it was recommended to revert Kanaujia to the rank of constable.
