Rourkela: A senior employee of the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) died of COVID-19 at the Ispat General Hospital (IGH) on Friday.
According to sources, Arun Kumar Behera (55), senior operative of the Coal Chemical Department (CCD), was admitted to IGH recently after testing COVID positive. He fought for a few days before succumbing to the deadly virus.
The deceased is survived by his wife, a daughter who is pursuing PG course at the MKCG Medical College & Hospital at Berhampur and a son who is a second-year student at the NIT, Rourkela.
In a press release, Steel Executives’ Federation of India (SEFI) secretary Bimal Bisi said that this is the first death of an RSP employee during the second wave of COVID-19.
He said out of 30 employees of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) who have died due to coronavirus across the country, six are from RSP.
He lamented that while other PSUs in India have provided compensation to families of the employees who have died of COVID-19, SAIL is yet to implement the same for its employees.
