Bhubaneswar: The authorities of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, are planning to discharge the separated conjoined twins, Jaga and Kalia,
They have made a video of the agreement with the parents of the twins and sent it along with other documents to the State Health Secretary.
Notably, the conjoined twins were admitted to AIIMS on July 13, 2017. Joined at the head, they were successfully separated after an 11-hour marathon surgery by a team of 30 specialists from neurosurgery, neuro-anaesthesia and plastic surgery departments on October 25 last year.
On July 20 this year, the Odisha government had requested the authorities to keep the twins for six more months, stating that they needed more time to recover.
The hospital authorities, however, differed on it. “The health condition of Jaga and Kalia is stable and they no longer need hospital care. Moreover, there is long queue of patients waiting for beds in the private ward,” said AIIMS authorities.
According to the sources, three senior doctors, who were involved in the major operation, discussed the matter with the parents, who reportedly agreed with the doctors and as a proof, they were asked to sign on a paper.
Though a little sceptical about the whole thing, they accepted having signed the agreement. “Though Jaga is stable, Kalia is suffering from fever for the last two days. The doctors will decide whether to discharge them or not,” said father of the twins Bhuyan Kanara.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had met the separated conjoined twins on November 26 last year and prayed for their speedy recovery.
He had thanked Prof Randeep Guleria and Prof Ashok Mohapatra and the entire team of doctors for performing an incredible job and for their untiring efforts in saving the precious lives of the two little children and assured the Director, AIIMS, of providing necessary support for their treatment.
