New Delhi: The three service chiefs on Tuesday announced and revealed the details of a much-debated short-term recruitment policy called ‘Agnipath’ at a press conference in which Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was also present.

Called ‘tour of duty’ in the past, soldiers recruited under the new model will be inducted in the armed forces as ‘Agniveers’, a new distinct rank, as opposed to sepoys who joined the Indian Army under the legacy recruitment model, according to an HT reported on Tuesday.

‘Agniveers’ will form a distinct rank in the three services, and will also wear a distinct ins

ignia as part of their uniform.
