Puri: Seven persons, including two kanwariyas and five policemen, were injured in a scuffle between devotees and servitors at Lokanath Temple in Puri on Monday.
According to reports, a servitor attacked a kanwariya from Gosani Nuagaon in Berhampur when the latter had gone to pour water in the temple. This led to the scuffle between the servitors and the kanwariyas, who later approached police personnel at a nearby temple premises. Having failed to elicit any response from the cops, the kanwariyas created a ruckus at their camp. The policemen then had to resort to lathicharge to disperse them.
Those injured were admitted to Puri district headquarters hospital.
An injured police official said, “They had some problem within themselves and later attacked the police camp. The reason behind the incident will only be clear after a probe.”
Meanwhile, police have detained three persons and they are being interrogated by Puri SP, who reached the spot immediately after the incident.
