New Delhi: A major fire broke out in a market in the busy Chandni Chowk area of Delhi early on Thursday morning, reducing several shops into ashes.
The fire broke out at around 4.40 am and engulfed scores of small shops in a matter of few hours. The incident happened at the Lajpat Rai market of Chandni Chowk near the Red Fort.
Delhi Fire Service and police team reached the spot immediately and started relief and rescue operations. At least 12 fire tenders were pressed into service, and it took them almost four hours to douse the flames, sources informed. Goods worth lakhs have reportedly been gutted. However, there were no reports of any casualty.
Taking to media persons, senior fire service official Rajesh Shukla said, “The incident took place at Tehbazari market where 105 small shops of 10×4 size were gutted. The exact cause is still not known, but some fault in electric wiring is being said to have started the fire.”
