Bhubaneswar: Severe heatwave conditions may continue to prevail in Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, Boudh, Nayagarh, Keonjhar, and Balangir during the next 24 hours, the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre informed on Sunday.

Heatwave condition is also likely at one or two places in Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri, Jharsugada, Bargarh, Sonepur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Balasore.

Hot and humid weather condition may also prevail at many places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

The weather agency has also forecast a slight fall in temperature by 2-3 degree Celsius at many places in the state as thunderstorm accompanied by lightning  and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may occur at one or two places in Kandhamal, Ganjam, Rayagada, Gajapati, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, and Balangir.

According to Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA), development of anticyclone in the Bay of Bengal may bring some respite from the extreme heatwave conditions prevailing across Odisha from April 21.

“There may be flow of weak sea breeze into the coastal districts and nearby regions from April 21 which might continue till April 25,” said CEC director Sarat Sahu.

There was also a probability of occurrence of norwester accompanied by rain and thunder on the evening of April 21 and also the next day in the coastal and southern districts of Odisha.

However, the day temperature will hover between 38 degree Celsius and 41 degree Celsius in the interior districts and between 37 degree Celsius and 39 degree Celsius in the coastal belt. Some of the stations could record less than 36 degree Celsius also, he said.

The day temperature may shoot up subsequently due to disappearance of anti-cyclone and absence of sea breeze from April 26 which will continue till April 30 with day temperature rising to 44 or 45 degree Celsius from April 28, he added.

On Saturday, the day temperature breached 43 degree Celsius in 10 places with Boudh and Baripada being the hottest at 45.2 degree Celsius each.
