Sambalpur: They met, fell in love and got married. They enjoyed a healthy conjugal relation. And then the dream marriage became a nightmare.
The wife, a native of Sambalpur district, attempted suicide after her husband threatened to make her intimate pictures viral on social media.
Fortunately, doctors at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) were able to save her life. She is now recuperating at the DHH.
The accused husband has been identified as Jitesh (23), a resident of Dumerpali in Raigarh district of neighbouring Chhattisgarh.
According to reports, the woman had met Jitesh when she had gone to visit a relative’s home at Dumerpali. Jitesh convinced her to marry him, claiming he worked as a secretary at the panchayat office.
On June 26 last year, the two got married in a temple at Mudipada in Sambalpur district. The couple took a house on rent at Mundipada and stayed there for a while due to the lockdown. Later, Jitesh took her to his hometown in Chhattisgarh.
Things changed after that. The woman’s mother-in-law demanded Rs 3 lakh in dowry. Also, Jitesh’s uncle threatened to separate the woman from her husband because she refused his proposal to work in a jatra troupe. Then began a series of mental and physical torture.
On January 23, the couple came to Sambalpur to attend a marriage. However, on the evening of January 26, Jitesh ran away from Mudipada after taking her mobile phone, an ATM card and gold jewellery.
Later, the woman lodged a complaint at Mahila police station of dowry torture and cheating against Jitesh. After no action was taken by police, the woman again tried to a lodge a police complaint at Raigarh.
Meanwhile, Jitesh got wind of the police complaint. He then sent intimate pictures of the victim with him and threatened to make them viral if she went to police again.
Failing to get justice, the woman tried to kill herself by consuming phenyl on Thursday. She was later rushed to hospital.
When contacted, Mahila police said the accused belongs to Chhattisgarh and they have initiated the process to send a team there.
