Bhubaneswar: The court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) in Odisha capital has sentenced a lady doctor to jail in a sex determination test.
As per the case, the doctor runs a private clinic in Jaydev Vihar area of Bhubaneswar. Following allegation that she was conducting sex determination test in the clinic, police conducted a raid in August 2019. Subsequently, the Health department sealed the clinic and filed a case against the lady doctor.
After hearing 14 affidavits and 7 witnesses related to the case, the JMFC court convicted the doctor and sentenced her to 2 and a half years of imprisonment. The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 9,000 on her.
It may be noted that sex determination is banned in the country under the Preconception & Prenatal Diagnostic Technologies (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994, also known as the PC PNDT Act.
