SFDR Propelled Missile Successfully Flight Tested Off Odisha Coast; Know More About This Technology

Balasore:  The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Friday successfully flight tested the second indigenously developed ‘Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR)’ propulsion based missile system from Interim Teat Range at Chandipur in Odisha’s Balasore.

According to sources, the ground booster motor and nozzle-less motor performed well. The separation of the ground booster was perfect.

The successful demonstration of the indigenously developed propulsion technology is expected to accelerate the development of long-range air-to-air missiles.

The DRDO had earlier conducted the test in February 2019.

The first test of this advanced technology-driven missile was carried out in May 2018.

The main difference between this missile and the regular air-to-air missiles is the air-breathing ramjet propulsion technology, which helps propel the missile at high supersonic speeds (above Mach 2) for engaging targets at long ranges, DRDO sources said.

The SFDR Mission Project was started in 2013 with nearly Rs 500-crore budget. It was to be demonstrated in 5 years.
