Mumbai: Karan Johar was angry to see his name featuring in the title of a film – ‘Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar’.

So much so that he moved Bombay High Court for justice.

On Thursday, Johar breathed a sigh of relief after the high court restrained the release of the film after finding a strong prima facie case that the makers of the film have made unauthorised use of his name and personality.

The court also restrained the makers from using Johar’s name, or any other attributes or reference to the name ‘Karan Johar’ in any manner, Livelaw.in reported.

The film, directed by Bablu Singh, was scheduled to release in theatres on June 14.

“In my view a strong prima facie case has been made out by the plaintiff to protect his personality rights which are vested in him considering that he has the status of celebrity as apparent from several blockbuster films which he has directed and produced. There is no manner of doubt that the plaintiff has played a role in transforming the Bollywood film industry and launched careers of several successful actors. I have to doubt that prima facie the subject film is a direct reference to the plaintiff and makes unauthorised use of plaintiff’s name,” Justice RI Chagla said in his order.

Johar moved the Bombay High Court on Wednesday, seeking that the makers be prevented from using his name in the title of the film. The petition also sought an urgent stay on the film’s release.

Highlighting that the film’s trailer and posters have been displayed in public areas and on social media, Johar claimed these were causing him irreparable damage.

“These trailers and posters have caused and are continuing to cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation of Johar. Further, such a release of the film with the title containing his brand name ‘Karan Johar,’ together or in parts, will cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation which he has gained after investing huge amounts of time, effort, and money,” the petition stated.
