Kendrapada: A portion of a submerged ship have surfaced in the sea near Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary in Kendrapada district after cyclone Montha hit the Andhra coast and passed through Odisha.
As per information, the wreckage was sighted around one kilometre off Ekakulanasi village under Rajnagar block of the district on Thursday.
Under the influence of the severe cyclonic storm, the sea had turned turbulent and high tides lashed the coast. When the water receded following the cyclone, the ship wreckage became visible.
While it is yet to be ascertained as to when the ship had sunk, experts are of the opinion that the vessel might date back to the British era. They point out that the ship appears to have been built with aluminium, which is not a normal feature in modern vessels.
Local residents fear that the hidden debris could pose a serious threat to fishing or forest patrolling boats during high tide, as the wreckage surfaced during low tide. They have demanded quick steps to being the wreckage to the shore to prevent any possible mishap.
While senior local officials are yet to comment on the sighting of the ship wreckage, experts said proper investigation and research should be conducted to ascertain the exact period in which the vessel sank and its origin.
