New Delhi: Coal India plans to import coal for the first time in years as shortages of the fossil fuel and power outages loom, according to a Reuters report.
Coal India will import the fuel for the first time since 2015, the report said, to avoid a repeat of April, when India faced widespread power cuts.
“Coal India would import coal for blending on government-to-government (G2G) basis and supply … to thermal power plants of state generators and independent power producers (IPPs),” the Power Ministry said in a letter dated May 28, according to the report.
India is expected to face a wider coal shortage during the third quarter of 2022.
