New Delhi: Social media can be a cruel beast. One negative comment can lead to a torrent for no rhyme or reason.
The latest sufferer was rising cricketing star Shubhman Gill’s sister Shahneel Gill.
Shahneel shared pictures of her watching Sunday’s IPL match with her friends, on social media, after Shubman’s classy unbeaten century helped Gujarat Titans win the game and, thereby, knock Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) out of playoff contention.
Supporters of RCB and Kohli – who also scored an unconquered ton which wasn’t enough in the end – didn’t like Shahneel’s posts and targeted the sister-brother duo.
Swati Maliwal, chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), took strong exception to the abusive messages and vowed to take action against trollers.
Sharing screenshots of some of Twitter users’ messages, Maliwal said DCW will take action against all those who have abused her.
Drawing a parallel with netizens abusing Kohli’s daughter earlier, Maliwal tweeted: “Extremely shameful to see trollers abusing #ShubhmanGill’s sister just because the team they follow lost a match. Previously we had initiated action against people abusing #ViratKohli daughter. DCW will take action against all those who have abused Gill’s sister as well. This shall not be tolerated!”
Delhi Police earlier this year registered an FIR against unidentified persons for allegedly making lewd comments on social media on daughters of Kohli and MS Dhoni, following a complaint by the DCW.
The FIR was registered at the Special Cell unit under the relevant section of Information Technology Act, and investigation is still on.
