Basel (Switzerland): Ace shuttler P V Sindhu on Sunday became the first Indian to win the BWF World Championships. She put up an impressive show, crushing Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 21-7, 21-7 in just 36 minutes in the final to win her maiden gold.
“I dedicate this medal to my mother. It’s her birthday today,” Sindhu said after the win.
The world no 6 also thanked her coach Pullela Gopichand and support staff.
With this win, she also equalled the record of maximum five medals won by any player at World Championships. Sindhu now has 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze in her kitty. This is India’s 10th medal at World Championships and Sindhu has won five of those. Sai Praneeth also won a bronze medal in 2019 World Championship.
