Chandigarh: As if bouncers from his political adversaries within and outside Congress were not enough, Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday faced a fresh salvo – this time from within the family.
Elder sister Suman Tur described Sidhu as “a cruel person” and accused him of “deserting” her aged mother for the “sake of money”.
US resident Suman, who is in Chandigarh now, said at a press conference that Sidhu drove her and their mother out of the house in 1986, after their father’s death. Their mother died at Delhi railway station as a destitute in 1989.
“We have seen very tough times. My mother was in the hospital for four months. I have documentary evidences of whatever I am claiming,” Suman said.
The 70-year-old lady further claimed that Sidhu snapped ties with them for property.
“My father had left assets including a house and land besides pension… Navjot Singh Sidhu deserted my mother for the sake of money. We do not want any money from Sidhu,” Suman added.
She went on to accuse Sidhu of lying about the separation of her parents in an interview in 1987.
“Whatever Navjot Sidhu is claiming about my parents is false,” Suman said, asking for evidence from Sidhu about their parents’ separation.
“My mother had approached the court after Navjot Sidhu had claimed that there was a judicial separation between her and our father,” Suman said.
Explaining the reason behind calling a press conference to talk about the family, Suman said she had gone to meet Sidhu on January 20 but the latter didn’t let her in.
“I was compelled to address a press conference after attempts to contact Navjot Singh Sidhu failed. He has blocked me on his phone. His servants also do not open doors. I want justice for my mother,” Suman said.
His sister’s allegations couldn’t have come at a worse time for Sidhu, who is campaigning for next month’s Punjab Assembly elections and hopes to be named chief minister if Congress wins.
