Six Months To Go For ‘Safe’ COVID-19 Vaccine, Says Serum Institute Of India

Pune: The Serum Institute of India (SII) here has said that it will take at least six months for one of its vaccines to be used for the public.

India’s premier vaccine maker has entered into a partnership with the University of Oxford to speed up the development of a safe and affordable Coronavirus vaccine to make available early prototypes of a “safe” vaccine as soon as possible, Times Of India (TOI) reported.

Issuing a statement at a press conference, the company’s CEO said that while work is underway, the researchers were in no rush and wanted to produce a safe and effective vaccine, TOI reported.

“Once we are confident of a safe and good vaccine for India and the world. We will certainly announce it when we are licensed by the Drug Controller (DCGI), but that is still at least six months away from now,” he was quoted as saying in the TOI report.

He also said in the report that till we wait for a vaccine to come, the only way to tackle the crisis is to increase the testing load, which they have done by partnering with a startup, Mylab, one of the first Indian companies to produce an affordable and speedy COVID testing kit.
