Bhubaneswar: Six members of a family allegedly attempted self-immolation in front of Naveen Niwas to draw the attention of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik over alleged police inaction in a murder case.
The incident disrupted vehicular traffic on the busy road at Palaspalli in the city.
According to sources, Daityaraj Nayak was allegedly murdered at Chandrasekharpur area in 2022. He was allegedly given poison with drugs and an attempt was then made to burn the body using acid, according to the family. The body was recovered from a canal stuffed inside a gunny bag near Panda Park slum under Chandrasekharpur Police limits in June 2022.
Police had also registered a case but no action was taken till August 15 when one Ashok Jena was arrested in connection with the murder case, following repeated protests by the family members. However, other accused persons, who are yet to be apprehended, are allegedly threatening the family and they fear that they would met a similar fate.
They alleged that the accused persons are involved in the illegal narcotic drugs trade.
The family members have been taken to Airfield police station and assured that the accused would be arrested soon, the sources added.
