Bhubaneswar: The COVID toll in Odisha touched 8,035 with seven more COVID patients succumbing to the deadly disease in the last 24 hours.
The state had seen six deaths the previous day after the state government announced the end of the audit of the backlog deaths, which had gone up during the peak of the pandemic.
Among the new fatalities is a six-year-old girl of Balasore district. With this, the second wave of the pandemic has claimed the lives of 39 children and adolescents in Odisha. As many as 13 of these deaths were reported between August 10 and 31.
The deceased have been identified as:
1. A 6 years old girl child of Balasore District.
2. A 71 years old male of Cuttack District who was also suffering from Diabetes Mellitus.
3. A 56 years old male of Dhenkanal District who was also suffering from Hypertension, Hypothyroidism & Coronary Artery Disease.
4. A 80 years old female of Ganjam District.
5. A 57 years old female of Ganjam District who was also suffering from Diabetes Mellitus & Hypertension.
6. A 65 years old female of Kendrapada District.
7. A 45 years old female of Puri District who was also suffering from Myasthenia Gravis Multiple Sclerosis.
Odisha reported 6159 COVID deaths in the second against 1876 the previous year.
Around 6,000 fatalities were added in the last four months. August saw around 66 deaths a day, on an average, while it was 61 in July and 42 in June. Similarly, 2,056 fatalities were registered last month, while July saw 1,903 deaths, June (1,272) and May (737), the health department sources said.
The highest 1,463 deaths were reported from Khurda followed by 808 in Cuttack, 572 in Sundargarh, 469 in Ganjam, 440 in Puri, 375 in Angul and 334 in Bargarh.
Odisha’s toll is the 16th highest in the country with the state contributing to 1.82 per cent of the total deaths. Though the overall case-fatality ratio has increased to 0.8 per cent from 0.4 per cent during the first wave, it is lower than the national average of 1.33 per cent.
