Jeypore: A six-year-old girl was charred to death while her mother and brother sustained severe burn injuries after a fire broke out in their house at Taragaon village under Borigumma block of Koraput district on Monday.
According to locals, the fire erupted this morning from a container of petrol kept inside the house and spread very rapidly.
Hearing the screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and managed to rescue the woman and her seven-month-old son. However, the minor girl was burnt alive.
The father was not home at the time of the mishap.
The duo was immediately rushed to Borigumma hospital from where they were referred to the district headquarters hospital in Jeypore.
As their condition deteriorated, they were later shifted to Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital here for better treatment.
The condition of the mother-son duo is stated to be serious.
Meanwhile, the villagers demanded adequate compensation for the family members of the deceased.
