Bhadrak: Skulls and skeletal remains, suspected to be that of a 59-year-old woman and her daughter, were recovered near a village in Basudevpur area of Odisha’s Bhadrak district.
As per preliminary information, police have found the remains of the woman and her daughter who were missing from Panchagheria village under the jurisdiction of Nayakanidihi police station in the district. The two were suspected to have been murdered and buried.
Sources said the woman, identified as Jamuna Nayak (59), and her daughter Kousalya Nayak (35) were reported missing since September 27. Kousalya’s husband Gurupad Gahana is suspected to be involved in the incident. The two had been buried near a canal on the outskirts of the village.
The matter came to light after villagers spotted stray dogs feeding on the skeletal remains. On being informed, police reached the site and found human skull, teeth, bones and other decomposed body parts.
Senior police officials, including Bhadrak Sadar SDPO, also rushed to the village and launched a probe into the incident. Later, under suspect, police have detained Gurupad Gahana and his brother Nirapad Gahana.
According to sources, Gurupad lived with his wife Kousalya and her mother Jamuna. He is suspected to have killed the two women and buried the bodies. Police suspect his brother Nirapad Gahana of helping him in burying the bodies.
The two brothers had lodged a missing complaint with the police. Further investigation into the incident is underway, police said.
