New Delhi: India got bundled out for 230 in 47.5 overs in the first ODI against Sri Lanka on Friday, ending the game in a tie. Social media was buzzing with memes for the India fast bowler Arshdeep Singh after he failed to take the team over the line at Colombo’s R.Premadasa Stadium. Arshdeep walked to the crease as India required one run to win off 14 balls after the dismissal of a well-set Shivam Dube (25 off 24).
However, the tailender failed to hold his nerve and went for a big hit on the first ball itself and ended up being hit on his pads by Charith Asalanka. Seeing the ball’s trajectory hitting the stumps, all the Sri Lankan players went up for an appeal and Arshdeep was adjudged lbw.
Following his dismissal, the young seamer became a butt of jokes on social media as fans came up with several memes to describe his finishing prowess. While some people, edited his photographs with legendary India wicketkeeper batter MS Dhoni, others began imagining his confrontation with the head coach Gautam Gambhir.
After the game ended, India captain Rohit Sharma said he was disappointed not to get the win, but added he won’t read too much into it.
“Disappointed to not get 1 run with 14 balls but won’t read too much (into it). The bite was there at the start and then the ball became softer as the seam wore off. It was not a game where you could play your shots, had to apply yourself and dig in. Proud of how we fought, was important to hold our nerve,” said Rohit.
