Balangir: The District Legal Services Authority of Balangir in Odisha has decided to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the slain teacher Mamita Meher.
Following the death of Mamita, her brother Banti Meher had appealed to the district administration seeking financial help as she was the only earning member of the family. The destitute assistance committee of the District Legal Services Authority had decided to extend the financial help at a meeting on April 13.
The committee meeting, chaired by its chairman Laltendu Jena, considered total 26 applications submitted for assistance. It decided to extend assistance of Rs 22.70 lakh to 13 applicants. District collector Chanchal Rana, SP Nitin Kushalkar, SDPO Pradip Guru and other members were present at the meeting.
Of the total amount of Rs 20 lakh granted to the family of Mamita, Rs 5 lakh will be paid in the first phase and the rest amount after the court’s verdict on the case.
It may be noted that Mamita was working as a teacher at a college in Mahaling in Kalahandi district. She had gone missing on October 8, 2021 after which her family members lodged a complaint with the police alleging involvement of Govind Sahu, the principal of the college where she was a teacher, behind her disappearance.
On October 19, remains of her body were exhumed from a stadium construction site of the school in the presence of police. In this connection, Govind Sahu was arrested and sent to jail. Sahu was found hanging at Kantabanji sub-jail in Balangir district on December 20 before a court appearance.
