‘Slip Of Tongue’: Congress Leader Apologizes To Droupadi Murmu For ‘Rashtrapatni’ Remark

New Delhi: Under fire for his comment on Draupadi Murmu, senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Friday wrote an apology letter to the President, claiming that it was a ‘slip of the tongue’.

“I am writing to express my regret for having mistakenly used an incorrect word to describe the position you hold. I assure you that it was a slip of the tongue. I apologize and request you to accept the same,” the Congress Lok Sabha MP wrote.

Chowdhury referred to Murmu, who last week became the first tribal and only the second female President of India, as ‘Rashtrapatni’ in a TV interview on Wednesday. It triggered a massive uproar in Parliament, with several Union ministers and other BJP leaders demanding an apology from Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Both Houses witnessed adjournments during the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament over the ‘Rashtrapatni’ row.

Chowdhury issued a clarification on Thursday, saying he had mistakenly used the word ‘Rashtrapatini’ and never intended to disrespect the President.
