Bhubaneswar: A group of slum-dwellers of Udaynagar led by Jatni MLA Suresh Routray gheraoed the official residence of Revenue Minister Sudam Marndi in protest against demolition of their houses.
The slum-dwellers including women sat on a dharna in front of the minister’s house blocking entrance to it demanding ‘Patta’ (record of rights) of the land in Udaynagar slum under Chandaka police limits where they have been staying since long.
They said they were staying in the slum since they had nowhere to go, the government should give them ‘Patta’ or rehabilitate them before demolishing their houses. “We have been rendered homeless. Where would we go now? The minister must assure of protecting our families,” said a protester.
The protesters threatened to intensify their agitation, if the government fails to take any steps on their demand soon.
The local authorities had demolished the houses in the slum as part of the drive against unauthorised occupation of land in the capital city on Friday.
