Apple and other smartphone makers are working on a technology to measure blood pressure of a person from a selfie video.
The accuracy of the method is reported to be 95 per cent, according to a report by Quartz. This could be life-changing technology as high blood pressure can lead to heart diseases among many other ailments. The report also pointed out that many people are not aware that they are suffering from high blood pressure.
Researchers at the University of Toronto in Canada and Hospital of Hangzhou Normal University in China are collaborating on this technology called “transdermal optical imaging”.
Psychologist Kang Lee explained that a smartphone takes around 900 images in 30 seconds to record the blood pressure. The measurements and the machine learning algorithm used in this are based on tests done on light-skinned people of East Asian or European descent currently.
