Rajkot: Stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana smashed the fastest ODI century by an Indian in Women’s ODIs off just 70 deliveries during the third ODI against Ireland at Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on Wednesday.
She got to her century with a couple in the first ball of the 24th over of India’s innings, bettering regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s previous record off 87 balls against South Africa in Bengaluru last year. The explosive opener scored 135 off 80 balls with seven sixes and 12 boundaries in a dominating knock., before being dismissed at short fine leg by Orla Prendergast.
With this, the 28-year-old has also become the first Indian woman to hit 10 ODI centuries, climbing the joint-third spot in the all-time list along with Australia’s Tammy Beaumont.
Mandhana’s 70-ball hundred is also the joint seventh-fastest in women’s ODI cricket history, equalling former England cricketer Charlotte Edwards’ effort from 2012. Meg Lanning holds the record for the fastest women’s ODI hundred. She took 45 ball to reach the three figures against New Zealand at the North Sydney Oval in Australia in 2012.
