Snakebites Kill Three More In Odisha

Kandhamal: As many as three persons died of snake bites in Odisha on Tuesday morning, just a day after six similar deaths in the state on Monday.

A mother and her minor son died of snakebite at a village in Kandhamal district. The deceased, Rajalaxmi and her son Aditya, were residents of Tapara village in K Nuagaaon block. Aditya was studying in Class III.

According to sources, a snake bit them when they were sleeping in their house late on Monday. Aditya died on the spot. Rajalaxmi later succumbed while undergoing treatment at a hospital in K Nuagaaon.

Besides, a youth of Gajamba village in Balasore district’s Soro block died after a snake bit him while he was asleep on Monday night.

Notably, six persons have died of snakebites in Angul, Ganjam and Keonjhar districts on Monday.

In Angul district, two sisters, Rosalin Sahu (13) and Sujata Sahu (11), of Bentapur village were sleeping in their room on Sunday night when a snake bit them. Their family took them to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, but they had died on the way.

In Ganjam district, a woman and her four-year-old child were bitten by a snake at B Nuapalli village in Kodala block. While the child died on way to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, the mother died while undergoing treatment.

Besides, a youth also died of snakebite at Kabisuryanar in the district.

In Keonjhar district, a woman died of snakebite at Guruma village in Talapada panchayat in Telkoi block. The deceased was identified as Dhariti Patra.

According to government statistics, 237 people have died of snakebites in the past four months.

As many as 811 such deaths were reported in 2018-19. In 2017-18, a total of 823 people had died of snakebites. In 2016-17, the toll was 605 and in 2015-16, it was 478.
