Kendrapada: Thanks to a sniffer dog, police were able to solve a murder and loot case within 24 hours in Kendrapada district.
Kendrapada SP Niti Sekhar said 55-year-old Minati Jena was found murdered at her home at Aradapali village near Pattamundai on August 17. The killers had also looted around Rs 5 lakh and gold ornaments by breaking the lock of a box in the house.
As part of their investigation, police brought the sniffer dog to the crime scene. After sniffing the broken lock, the dog led the investigators to the house of the alleged mastermind Anil Kumar Jena in the village.
During interrogation, Anil confessed to have murdered Minati with the help of six others while she was alone in her house, according to a report in New Indian Express.
The SP said Anil was a friend of the deceased’s son, Satyajit. He had told Anil that his mother kept a huge sum of money in her house after selling a piece of land. Following this, Anil hatched a plan to loot the cash and valuables from Minati’s house with the help of his brother-in-law and five others.
The seven accused went to the victim’s house while she was alone with the intent to loot the money and ornaments. But as she resisted their effort, they stabbed her to death.
Police have arrested the six other accused and recovered the looted money and ornaments from them. They were identified as Deepak Sethi, Ranjit Nayak, Susanta Patra, Sourva Mandal, Ashok Patra and Prakash Patra.
