Washim: An Indian Army soldier has been arrested for allegedly strangling his seven-month pregnant wife to death and then trying to pass it off as an accident in Washim, Maharashtra.
Dnyaneshwar Madne (28), a soldier of the 6th Battalion of the Maratha Light Infantry has been accused of having an affair. The murder was allegedly a fallout of the affair.
The police arrested Madne, following a complaint from the victim’s family. Rahul Madne, the victim’s brother, alleged that the accused called the family at around 3 pm on Thursday and claimed his wife, Deepali, had slipped at their home. He also told them that she had been hospitalised.
Deepali’s family, which lives in Burhanpur in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, immediately left for Washim and arrived there around 7 pm.
The soldier, meanwhile, took the woman to a private hospital, which referred her to a government-run facility. The doctors at the government hospital suspected murder and informed the police, as reported by NDTV.
Rahul has alleged that the accused had an affair with another woman and he frequently harassed Deepali over it.
A meeting was held between the two families a few months ago to sort out the dispute, and the matter was resolved amicably, or so the woman’s family believed.
Manish Thackeray, a police officer, stated that they received a memo from the government hospital saying that a woman’s body had been brought in an ambulance.
“When our team arrived at the hospital, it was clear something was wrong. There were clear injury marks on the woman’s neck,” he said.
Based on the complaint filed by Deepali’s brother, the police registered a murder case against the soldier and his parents.
